A word about sodium hydroxide - do not be alarmed, Sodium hydroxide does not remain in the finished bar because it has fully reacted with the oils and fats to be chemically changed via a process known as Saponification into pure soap and glycerin.
Sodium Hydroxide is made up of Sodium, Hydrogen, and Oxygen, together they make a strong alkali substance. During the soap making process the atoms break up into their individual elements then combine with the fats and water to create the soap and glycerine during the traditional soap making process. This process is known as Saponification.
Any soap which states it has not been made using Lye ie: Sodium Hydroxide or Potassium Hydroxide, you can be sure you are buying a detergent bar, these contain harsh skin drying ingredients such as SLS and are not a pure natural soap.
You will be surprised how many detergent based soap bars and melt & pour soaps are out there under the guise of real soap!
